Maybe because I'm very physical myself. But there have been times it has irritated me or worried me when someone just goes for the baby without asking. Especially when they were still very young or when I've had them in a front carrier and touching them means tugging on me or standing directly in front of me while I try to supervise my other children.
My kids are horrible, always wanting to kiss and hug babies and I always tell them to ask first. I do the same, myself. if I find myself reaching out to stroke a baby's hair or put my finger in his/her hand I always freeze and look to the parents. Sometimes I outright ask but sometimes you can tell just from a look if they mind or not.
But you have to speak up. Some people love their babies being handled, some don't and others don't know which you are. Meanwhile people shouldn't just swoop in and grab but sometimes they do.
Our youngest has a whole range of allergies so I often say, "I'm sorry he could break out in hives if you touch him." People understand.
I once saw these neat little iron on labels and signs for strollers and carriers that said "look but don't touch."Darahttp://www.readilyaparent.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195788236766051950.post-56399444854339205332010-03-27T17:34:27.869+00:002010-03-27T17:34:27.869+00:00Oh, it gets worse. I'm pleased that people respected your wishes with the sign - I can see that being more of a surefire way of putting the red light on over enthusiastic baby spotters!Tanya (Bump2Basics)http://www.chatty-t.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195788236766051950.post-80818695820386288862010-03-27T03:38:49.262+00:002010-03-27T03:38:49.262+00:00I have personal boundary issues as it is, and I do...I have personal boundary issues as it is, and I don't like people invading my space or my baby's space. I've found the baby sling to be pretty effective in keeping people from leaning in or touching. The baby is usually nestled in the sling, and I just pull the side out a bit to let them have a glimpse. Usually while in the sling the baby is sleeping, and I haven't had anyone try to reach in to touch.

Strollers are another issue. I like the suggestion of a sign. Even if you try to keep the baby covered with a blanket, it's likely to get kicked off.Cherylynhttp://mamasandbabies.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195788236766051950.post-59665308696051108712010-03-27T02:40:29.993+00:002010-03-27T02:40:29.993+00:00I'm not sure anyone ever came up and poked the...I'm not sure anyone ever came up and poked the baby in that way, but I remember a woman patting my bump when I was pregnant in the supermarket and saying 'Hi, Baby!' which I found most disconcerting.....nappyvalleygirlhttp://www.nappyvalleygirl.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195788236766051950.post-10570923996869183212010-03-27T01:35:38.807+00:002010-03-27T01:35:38.807+00:00I hated it when people touched my first baby and I...I hated it when people touched my first baby and I usually politely informed people by "making fun of myself" - I'd say something like "I know it's crazy, but I'm such a germ freak..." and they'd get the memo. But my second child was a preemie, immunosuppressed, and actually has an autoimmune disorder. So though we rarely went out in public the first several months, sometimes it was unavoidable. I would either keep her almost completely covered in the Moby wrap or if she was in the stroller I put a little sign on it that said, "My health is fragile; please don't lean in close!" and that was pretty effective.guccimamanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195788236766051950.post-22206275924534147382010-03-27T01:17:02.096+00:002010-03-27T01:17:02.096+00:00You've only got to look at the flu ads to keep...You've only got to look at the flu ads to keep everyone away from your baby!Vicglowstars.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195788236766051950.post-84989513392888540582010-03-27T01:06:50.736+00:002010-03-27T01:06:50.736+00:00Its a hard one isnt it.
